TWO GREAT WEEKS OF CAMP! Dates: June 20-24 and July 11-15

Black Squirrel Arts Camps are week-long art camps just for kids ages 7-9, 10-12 and 13-15. Classes are $150 for the entire week's camp which includes two classes each day. Students need to bring a sack lunch. Hours of the camp are 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. There are a limited number of spaces for each class so register now!A few scholarships are available for students who meet certain criteria. These are granted on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, call 328-4992.

WEEK ONE: JUNE 20-24 2011

Lewis Central Middle and High Schools

    Camp 1A: AGES 7-9 -- WAIT LIST ONLY

    • "Art Around the World" and "Creating with Clay"

    • Art Around the World -- This is an exploration of art forms from across the globe... rangoli from India, scherenschnitte from Germany, alebrije from Mexico, pysanky from the Ukraine, sand painting from the Navajo and quilting from the United States! Each day will be a "trip".
      Instructor: Kim Swanger

    • Creating with Clay -- Pots, pots, and more pots! Learn how to make ceramic pottery using a variety of techniques. We'll also take a look at how clay has been used by various cultures throughout history. Have fun getting your hands dirty!
      Instructor: Theresa DeWitt

    CAMP 1B: AGES 10-12

    • "Culinary for Kids" and "Abstract Art"

    • Culinary for Kids -- Back by popular demand! Students will learn about the natural beauty of food, the art of nutrition, basic techniques for food preparation and embark on an exploration of the world of foods. Perfect for newcomers to the kitchen and those who already love to cook!
      Instructor: Margarite Goodenow

    • Abstract Art: Want to become the next Picasso? Students will develop an understanding of the process of abstraction, a technique used in some of the most famous modern works of art. Through a series of exercises, the students will begin to see the path an artist takes from looking at the world in a realistic way to presenting it with simplification. Students will work with paint, collage, and sculpture to make their own abstractions!

    CAMP 1C: AGES 10-12

    • "Discover the Mystery of Grant Wood" and "Recycled Arts"

    • Discover the Mystery of Grant Wood -- Students will undertake an in-depth study of the most famous Iowa artist, Grant Wood. Discover the mysterious connections between Grant Wood and Council Bluffs! A variety of media and techniques will be used from collage to landscapes.
      Instructor: Karen Buhr

    • Recycled Arts -- Using discarded magazines as inspiration, transform a variety of items into recycled artwork! Pencil holders, wearable art, drink coasters, and woven baskets are a few of the pieces of art we will create. A fun and green way to spend a week!

    CAMP 1D: AGES 13-15

    • "Altered Books" and "Learn to Act"

    • Altered Books -- Transform out of date, discarded, and past copyright date books into personal works of art! Stamping, pasting, painting, collage work and a creative "theme" come together to make this piece of art a keepsake that tells a visual story.
      Instructor: Nicole Baker

    • Learn to Act! -- Become a star on Broadway! This camp will familiarize students with the basic skills of acting. Build confidence and creativity with lots of improvisation and fun theatre games!

      CAMP 2A, Lee Spann Memorial Camp: Ages 7-9 -- WAIT LIST ONLY

      • "Printmaking Fun" and "Puttin' on a Show!"

      • Printmaking Fun -- Discover the fun you can have with printmaking! By the end of the week you'll be able to tell your friends you can do blotto, Gyotaku, bubble blowing, paper marbling, relief prints, and intaglio! Themes we will focus on are self, symbolism, and life.

      • Puttin' on a Show! -- Love to be on stage? Can't stop singing? Bring together music, movement and drama in a class performance to impress your friends and family!
        Instructor: Denise Putman

      • "Viva El Arte de Mexico" and "Creating with Clay"

      • Viva El Arte de Mexico -- Young artists will learn about the wide variety of Mexican art forms, past & present. Weaving, bead art, yarn art, painting and paper mache are all on the "to do" list for this exciting experience. Bring your sombrero and prepare to get messy!

      • Culinary for Kids -- Back by popular demand! Students will learn about the natural beauty of food, the art of nutrition, basic techniques for food preparation and embark on an exploration of the world of foods. Perfect for newcomers to the kitchen and those who already love to cook!
        Instructor: Margarite Goodenow

      • Textile Arts -- Learn the ins and outs of what you can do with fabric! Students will explore various textile art forms, such as Batik, Tie Dye, On and Off Loom Weaving, and Applique, and use the decorated fabric to make a useful object such as a pillow or bag. Make fun and functional art!
