Look Here!DAY CAMPS FOR KIDS WITH AN EMPHASIS ON THE ARTS!

THREE WEEKS OF CAMPS! Dates: July 12-16 and July 19-23 and August 2-6

Black Squirrel Arts Camps are week-long art camps just for kids ages 7-9, 10-12 and 13-15. Classes are $150 for the entire week's camp which includes two classes each day. Students need to bring a sack lunch. Hours of the camp are 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
There are a limited number of spaces for each class so register now!
A few scholarships are available for students who meet certain criteria. These are granted on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, call 328-4992.

WEEK ONE: JULY 12-16

    Registration Deadline for Week One is July 2

    Camp 1A: AGES 7-9 (Lewis Central High School)

    • Symbolism Around the World" and "Clay Creations"

    • Symbolism Around the World -- When is a circle more than just a shape? Explore the meaning and use of symbols by different cultures around the world using several types of media including collage, chalk, and paint. A fun and eye-opening look at the world around us!
      Instructor: Kim Swanger

    • Clay Creations -- OK, Let's get our hands dirty! This class is designed to give you the most creative clay time, the most fun, and the most pots to take home at the end of the class. We will learn how to create various projects, both functional and sculptural, how to glaze them, and we'll learn how to evaluate what we have made. We will also experiment with a variety of firing techniques from different cultures. Get ready for fun! Instructor: Clay Cunningham

    CAMP 1B: AGES 10-12 (Lewis Central High School)

    • "Culinary for Kids" and "Creative Writing ABCs"

    • Culinary for Kids -- Back by popular demand! Students will learn about the natural beauty of food, the art of nutrition, basic techniques for food preparation and embark on an exploration of the world of foods. Perfect for newcomers to the kitchen and those who already love to cook! Instructor: Margarite Goodenow

    • Creative Writing ABCs -- Join Dr. Todd Robinson, a professor in UNO's Writer's Workshop, as he takes you through a week's worth of fun, strange, and productive exercises to help you nurture and improve your writing skills. You'll read and write essays, stories, and poems as you learn the essential techniques of creative craft, and you'll finish the week with an unforgettable presentation of your work.

      • Clay Creations -- OK, Let's get our hands dirty! This class is designed to give you the most creative clay time, the most fun, and the most pots to take home at the end of the class. We will learn how to create various projects, both functional and sculptural, how to glaze them, and we'll learn how to evaluate what we have made. We will also experiment with a variety of firing techniques from different cultures. Get ready for fun! Instructor: Clay Cunningham

      • Recycled Arts -- Look at the world with new eyes! See the amazing possibilities in everyday materials that might otherwise become trash. We'll look at different styles of art through history and create our own versions using recycled materials. Bring any interesting materials you have at home and we'll make them into unique works of art! A fun and green way to spend a week! Instructor: Laura Heilman

      CAMP 2B: AGES 10-12 (Lewis Central Middle and High Schools)

      • "Textile Art" and "Clay Creations"

      • Textile Art: Learn the ins and outs of what you can do with fabric! Students will explore various textile art forms, such as Batik, Tie Dye, On and Off Loom Weaving, and Applique, and use the decorated fabric to make a useful object such as a pillow or bag. Make fun and functional art! Instructor: Nicki Luth

      • Culinary for Kids: Back by popular demand! Students will learn about the natural beauty of food, the art of nutrition, basic techniques for food preparation and embark on an exploration of the world of foods.       • Abstract Art: Want to become the next Picasso? Students will develop an understanding of the process of abstraction, a technique used in some of the most famous modern works of art. Through a series of exercises, the students will begin to see the path an artist takes from looking at the world in a realistic way to presenting it with simplification. Students will work with paint, collage, and sculpture to make their own abstractions! Instructor: Nicki Luth

        CAMP 3A: Ages 7-9 (Broadway Methodist Church)

        • "Viva El Arte de Mexico" and "Fun with Rug-Making"

        • Viva El Arte de Mexico: Students will learn about the current and ancient arts of Mexico including folk arts, music, dance, and culinary arts. Don't be surprised if you finish the week speaking a little Spanish and ready to show off your tortilla and pinata making skills! Instructor: Kim Swanger

        • Fun with Rug-Making: Want to make something unique and useful? Using a special toothbrush needle students will learn to tear scraps of material and create a cool rug for your room! Instructor: Deb Masker

        • In Tune with the Arts -- Tune in to some great singing basics. Learn how to use your voice and develop your sound. We will work with some great music, learn a little choreography and improve your musicianship! Instructor: Deb Masker
