FREE "Peace Through Corn" Performance
Monday, February 28th, 2011

Half a century ago, America's most feared and hated ideological enemy paid a house visit to his farmer friend Roswell Garst in Coon Rapids, Iowa. "Peace through Corn" told the story of the unlikely friendship between Nikita Khrushchev and Garst through a staged dialogue between the two men, based on actual language from their letters, memoirs and historic press coverage. The performance showed the power of agriculture and citizen diplomacy to reach across ideological and cultural barriers and promote peace. The Bluffs Arts Council presented this 50-minute one-act play by Iowa playwright Cynthia Mercati followed by an audience discussion. The performance was produced by Creating Great Places and the content was suitable for all ages. Only eight cultural organizations in Iowa have been offered the opportunity to host this presentation. Sponsored by Cal and Frankie Parrott, Jim and Joan Campbell
